Anthea Houston

CEO, Communicare

Anthea Houston is Chief Executive for the Communicare group of companies and Chairperson of the National Association of Social Housing Organisations (NASHO). She has worked on the development of sustainable human settlements for over two and a half decades.

Communicare is a diversified property management company registered as a social enterprise to expand the provision of affordable rental housing in Cape Town.  The organisation owns and manages a residential portfolio of over 3500 apartments in well located Cape Town suburbs and a growing commercial portfolio. Using an innovative funding model, Communicare’s discounted social rentals are sustainably cross financed by its activities as a commercial property developer. Communicare is implementing a multi‐billion Rand pipeline to deliver 10 000 new homes into Cape Town’s housing market. NASHO, which Anthea Houston chairs, is an independent member-based association of social housing institutions in South Africa.  NASHO promotes the sustainability of the South African social housing sector through its research, advocacy, capacity development, technical advice, and information dissemination.

Houston serves as a board member of the US-Africa Collaborative, a pan-African platform to strengthen collaboration between human settlements practitioners on the African and North American continents. She was previously Chief Executive Officer for Development Action Group (DAG), a leading South African non-profit organisation focused on low-income housing and urban development. Since the late 90s she has been involved in the drafting of various human settlement policies and strategies at a regional and national level. She served two terms as non-executive Director of the National Housing Finance Corporation, a state-owned housing development finance entity.

Anthea also completed two terms as Council member on the Regulatory Body for the Architectural Profession and has served on advisory panels and reference groups for three local Ministers of Housing. She has undertaken field studies in East and Southern African regions whilst conducting research on housing and housing microfinance. Anthea holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from University of Cape Town and is a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative and the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
